Karl and Laimer secure Bayern Munich's 2-0 win at Atletico Madrid
Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer scored after half-time as Bayern Munich won 2-0 at Atletico Madrid. Bayern now have eight points from four Champions League matches.

Bayern Munich beat Atletico Madrid 2-0 at the Metropolitano on Tuesday, with second-half goals from Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer deciding their Champions League meeting. Sportschau reported that the victory took Bayern to eight points from four league-phase matches, while Atletico remained on four after failing to turn home advantage into a result.

Watch the highlights:

The visitors had to wait until after a goalless first half to make their chances count. According to FCBinside's live match coverage, Karl fired over, Harry Kane sent a volley wide and Josip Stanisic also missed the target before the interval. Julian Alvarez had threatened early for Atletico, but Bayern subsequently created several openings without finding a finish.

Joshua Kimmich tested Jan Oblak soon after the restart before Karl made the breakthrough in the 54th minute. FCBinside reported that a blocked Tom Bischof effort left Atletico struggling to clear. Karl took the ball from the defence around Robin Le Normand and finished past Oblak, turning a loose ball inside the area into Bayern's opening goal.

Laimer supplied the second after Alphonso Davies won possession and Kane picked out the Austrian's run. FCBinside described Laimer delaying his finish before driving the ball under the crossbar from the right side of the penalty area. The move gave Bayern a two-goal cushion after Dayot Upamecano had also threatened with an effort that struck the bar.

Atletico tried to respond to falling behind, with Diego Simeone making three substitutions. Marcos Llorente forced a save from Manuel Neuer, but the hosts could not convert that spell of pressure into a goal. Sportschau's report described Bayern overcoming several absences, with Neuer back in goal and Michael Olise able to start after being substituted with an injury against Borussia Dortmund.

The result improves Bayern's position in the race for a top-eight league-phase finish, which would bring direct entry to the last 16, without settling qualification. Their next assignment is away to Mainz in the Bundesliga on Saturday, November 7, according to Sportschau. Atletico must regroup before hosting Barcelona on Sunday, with their Champions League points total unchanged by this defeat.
