Karen Khachanov Ousts Third Seed Felix Auger-Aliassime at US Open

Karen Khachanov knocked third-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime out of the US Open on Thursday, winning their second-round match 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in New York. The defeat ended the Canadian’s tournament after two matches and sent the unseeded Russian into the third round.

Auger-Aliassime edged the opening set in a tiebreak, but Khachanov answered immediately and controlled the remaining three sets. He took the second set 6-3 to level the match, then won the third and fourth by identical 6-2 scores to complete the four-set victory.

A Canadian Press report published by Sportsnet detailed the serving problems that followed Auger-Aliassime throughout the match. The 26-year-old landed 58 percent of his first serves, faced 20 break points and was broken seven times. He also committed eight double faults. Both players finished with 12 aces.

The error count further underlined Khachanov’s advantage after the first set. Auger-Aliassime made 47 unforced errors, compared with 30 from Khachanov, according to the same report. AFP also reported that Khachanov produced several important backhand winners down the line as he overturned the early deficit.

The result represents a sharp reversal for Auger-Aliassime at a tournament where he reached the semifinals in 2025. He lost at that stage to eventual runner-up Jannik Sinner. Sportsnet reported that this year’s early exit could put his career-high world ranking of No. 4 at risk. Khachanov, meanwhile, has his own record of success in New York, having reached the US Open semifinals in 2022.

Auger-Aliassime’s elimination also reduced Canada’s presence in the men’s singles draw. Denis Shapovalov was left as the only Canadian man still competing and was scheduled to face eighth-seeded American Ben Shelton in the third round on Friday. In the women’s draw, Leylah Fernandez was due to meet third seed Jessica Pegula on Friday. For Khachanov, the immediate consequence is a place in the last 32 after one of the biggest men’s results of the tournament’s second round.
