Chelsea beat Austria Vienna 1-0 at Plough Lane on Wednesday to begin their Women's Champions League league-phase campaign with a victory. Wieke Kaptein scored in the 11th minute, with her effort going in off the crossbar, according to Sky Sport Austria's match report. The visitors threatened before half-time through Virginia Kirchberger, who missed after goalkeeper Livia Peng failed to hold Modesta Uka's delivery. Louise Schöffel also sent an effort narrowly wide. Chelsea had opportunities to extend their advantage through Alyssa Thompson and Melvine Malard, but neither added to Kaptein's early goal.

The second half brought important saves at both ends: Jasmin Pal denied Kaptein, while Peng stopped Uka. Austria continued to push, and Uka struck the post in the 76th minute. Chelsea's Sjoeke Nüsken also passed up a volleying opportunity as the match remained undecided until the closing stages. The single goal ultimately separated the sides.

Chelsea had reached the league phase by winning both legs of their qualifying play-off against Real Sociedad. The club's official pre-match information also recorded an unbeaten opening to their domestic league programme: a draw against Aston Villa followed by victories over Manchester United and Birmingham City. Wednesday's result added another European win to that sequence.

For Austria Vienna, the match marked a first appearance at this stage of the competition. Chelsea's official account of their opponents' route detailed three qualifying rounds, beginning with single-match victories over Hajduk Split and Farul Constanta. Austria then overturned a 2-1 first-leg loss against Brann, finishing that tie as 5-2 aggregate winners to secure their place.

The fixture also established a new meeting in both clubs' European records. Chelsea said the teams had never previously faced each other, and that Austria Vienna had not played an English opponent before. Their first such encounter ended in a narrow defeat rather than a point on their league-phase debut.
