Kane winner gives Bayern 2-1 victory at Elversberg

Harry Kane scored the winner as Bayern Munich beat promoted Elversberg 2-1 in the Bundesliga on Sunday, ending the hosts' perfect start to their first top-flight campaign. The result restored Bayern to winning ways in the league after their goalless draw at Schalke, according to AS.

Lennart Karl put Bayern ahead before Maurice Krattenmacher equalised for Elversberg. Kane then delivered the decisive goal to settle a match in which the newcomers had again threatened to take points from established opposition. AS reported that the home side's organised defence had initially frustrated Bayern despite the visitors controlling possession.

The match was the clubs' first competitive meeting, Bayern's official website confirmed. Elversberg became Bayern's 57th different Bundesliga opponent. Before Sunday, the Munich club had won its previous ten first league meetings with new opponents, with the most recent defeat in such a fixture coming at Energie Cottbus in October 2000. The Guardian reported that Kane captained Bayern with Manuel Neuer rested.

Elversberg's early results had made this more than a routine assignment against a promoted side. Bayern's pre-match account recorded a 3-2 opening victory over Bayer Leverkusen, followed by a comeback win at Borussia Monchengladbach. Elversberg had trailed 3-1 in that second match before recovering and finding a stoppage-time winner to make it six points from six.

Bayern also arrived with contrasting recent results of their own. Their official account noted that a 5-1 Bundesliga opening win against Stuttgart had been followed by the 0-0 at Schalke. They then beat Bodo/Glimt 5-0 in the Champions League during the week. Sunday's narrower success added another victory without repeating the margin of either of those wins.

The away result also extended an established unbeaten sequence. Bayern's published statistics showed they had gone 27 Bundesliga road matches without defeat before travelling to Elversberg, recording 20 wins and seven draws. The 2-1 victory increased that run to 28 matches, while handing Elversberg their first league defeat after two wins.
