Justin Ellis winner gives US fourth straight victory as Canada fall 1-0
Justin Ellis scored in the 29th minute as the United States beat Canada 1-0 in Minnesota, completing a four-win international window. Brian Schwake helped preserve the lead on his first international start.

Justin Ellis scored the only goal as the United States beat Canada 1-0 at Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Tuesday, October 6. The victory completed a four-win international window for Mauricio Pochettino's team and ended a run of two consecutive defeats against Canada, according to MLSsoccer.com's match report.

Watch the highlights:

Ellis struck in the 29th minute after Alex Freeman combined with Malik Tillman on the right and delivered the ball for the Orlando City forward to finish. MLSsoccer.com reported that it was the 19-year-old's second goal in his second U.S. start. Ellis had needed treatment following a first-half collision but returned to the field before scoring; he was replaced at halftime.

Canada tested goalkeeper Brian Schwake before the breakthrough. According to the Canadian Press report carried by Sportsnet, Jacob Shaffelburg forced two saves in the 16th minute, first from distance and then from the side of the penalty area after receiving a ball from Tani Oluwaseyi. Those opportunities came before Ellis put the hosts ahead with what proved the decisive finish.

The visitors threatened again after the interval. Schwake touched Luc de Fougerolles' effort onto the crossbar in the 63rd minute, while substitute Promise David later headed wide from Daniel Jebbison's delivery, Sportsnet reported. Canada also lost Stephen Eustaquio at halftime after he was hurt before the break. Mathieu Choiniere replaced him, with Jonathan David taking over the captain's armband.

U.S. Soccer's lineup notes showed six changes from the team that started against Mexico, with Chris Richards named captain. Schwake made his first international start after previously appearing as a substitute against Chile. Mathis Albert also received his first start, having come off the bench in the preceding three matches. The starting side's average age was 23 years and 156 days.

The win followed U.S. victories over Chile, Peru and Mexico. Canada finished its window with two wins and one defeat, having beaten Chile 1-0 and Peru 2-0, according to Sportsnet. For the Americans, the result concluded a period of extensive squad experimentation: MLSsoccer.com reported that 13 players made their national-team debuts across the window.
