Jürgen Klopp rejects racist criticism of Germany squad after Greece defeat
Jürgen Klopp has condemned racist social media criticism of Germany's national team after their Nations League defeat by Greece. The coach said his players remained united and pointed to sport as an example of mutual respect.

Jürgen Klopp has condemned racist criticism of Germany's national football team following their Nations League defeat by Greece, according to reporting by The Guardian. The Germany coach rejected social media arguments about the squad's racial makeup and said the players assembled at the national team camp remained strongly united despite the abuse.

Watch the highlights:

Klopp was asked about online claims that the team lacked sufficient German identity or white players. He dismissed those arguments and said he saw no reason to give the people making them more attention. His response also expressed frustration at the nature of social media discussion and the offensive views being circulated about his squad.

The comments came after Germany lost 1-0 to Greece last Sunday. The Guardian reported that it was Greece's first victory over Germany and that racist and other offensive posts followed the result. Klopp was speaking ahead of Germany's Nations League meeting with Serbia on Thursday, with the criticism of his players forming part of the questioning.

In defending the squad, Klopp pointed to the relationships that develop between sportspeople. He argued that a changing room offered an example of people respecting one another on the basis of facts rather than discrediting each other through false opinions. He also emphasised the unity of the group he had brought together, which includes several players with migrant backgrounds.

The Guardian placed the online abuse alongside repeated criticism of the national team's diversity by politicians from Alternative für Deutschland. The far-right AfD is the largest opposition party in Germany's Bundestag, the report noted. Its MPs have repeatedly used derogatory language about the squad's ethnic composition, extending the dispute over the team beyond reactions to results on the pitch.

Klopp took charge of Germany in the summer and has a four-year contract lasting until the end of the 2030 World Cup. His plans for the national side have attracted considerable attention since his appointment. In this latest response, he defended the cohesion of the players already in camp while rejecting demands to judge the team through its racial or ethnic makeup.
