Julian Ward returns as Liverpool sporting director after Hughes exit

Liverpool have appointed Julian Ward as sporting director, bringing him back to a post he left in 2023. The club confirmed that the appointment takes effect immediately, with Ward moving from his most recent role as technical director at Fenway Sports Group.

The appointment follows Richard Hughes's departure, which Liverpool announced on September 5. Hughes had arrived from Bournemouth in June 2024 and told the club's owners he wanted a new challenge. Liverpool said at the time that the search for his successor was under way and that an appointment would be announced later.

Hughes's tenure covered Liverpool's 20th league championship in 2024-25 and qualification for the Champions League the following season. In its statement announcing his exit, the club credited him with leading football operations, overseeing recruitment and supporting the coaching staff. FSG president Mike Gordon thanked Hughes for his contribution while acknowledging his decision to leave.

Ward's earlier Liverpool career began in October 2012, when he joined the recruitment and scouting operation. The club's account of his departure in 2023 records his move into loan pathways and football partnerships management three years later, followed by promotion to assistant sporting director. He took the senior job after the 2021-22 season, with Jorg Schmadtke subsequently appointed to succeed him in 2023.

In Liverpool's announcement of Ward's return, Gordon pointed to his experience across football and his detailed knowledge of the club as reasons for the choice. He said the appointment would strengthen the football operation and provide support for head coach Andoni Iraola. Ward also worked with Manchester City and Portugal's national team before first joining Liverpool.

Ward, in comments published by Liverpool, expressed gratitude for the owners' confidence and acknowledged the responsibilities attached to the position. He identified player and staff development alongside performance as priorities, and pointed to the expertise already present across the club's training and academy operations. His return puts a former holder of the post back in charge after Hughes's departure.
