Judd Trump beats Zhao Xintong 5-1 to reach British Open semi-finals

Judd Trump reached the British Open semi-finals with a 5-1 victory over world number one Zhao Xintong in Cheltenham on Friday. BBC Sport reported the result, while the World Snooker Tour match center and Snooker.org also recorded the six-frame quarter-final score. The ranking tournament runs from August 31 through September 6.

Trump opened the match with a century break of 101, according to Eurosport's coverage. Etusuora reported that he added breaks of 57, 51 and 72 during the contest, giving Zhao few opportunities to build momentum across the best-of-nine-frame match. The win secured Trump's place in Saturday's last four. Snooker.org lists the semi-finals as best-of-11-frame matches, with the final scheduled for Sunday.

Zhao's only frame came in the third, when he compiled a century of his own. Etusuora reported that the Chinese player scored only 55 points across the other five frames. Trump therefore restored his lead immediately after Zhao reduced the deficit and closed out the match without allowing another frame.

The quarter-final brought together the player who had recently taken over at the top of the world rankings and the man he displaced. BBC Sport identified Zhao as the world number one going into the match, while tournament records listed Trump as the third seed and Zhao as the fifth seed for the British Open.

The result also reversed the outcome of their major meeting earlier in 2026. In April, Zhao beat Trump 10-3 in the Tour Championship final in Manchester, a result reported by BBC Sport. This time, Trump controlled a much shorter race and limited Zhao to a single successful frame.

Trump arrived in the quarter-finals after consecutive 4-0 victories over Elliot Slessor and David Gilbert, according to Snooker.org's tournament results. Zhao had beaten Mark Joyce 4-2 in the previous round. Elsewhere in Friday's quarter-finals, TNT Sports reported that Mark Selby defeated Jack Lisowski 5-0 and Liam Highfield beat Stan Moody 5-2, putting both English players into the semi-final lineup alongside Trump.
