Josh Tongue ruled out of Australia tour as Rashid leads England warm-up win
Josh Tongue will miss England's white-ball tour of Australia because of a toe injury, BBC Sport reported on Saturday. The fast bowler's withdrawal came as England completed their latest preparation in Perth with a 92-run victory over Western Australia, built around four wickets from Adil Rashid and three from Jofra Archer.
Watch the highlights:
The International Cricket Council confirmed that Tongue would return to the UK for further assessment, with the examination intended to establish the extent of the problem and the next steps in his recovery. England's three-match one-day international series begins in Perth on November 13, before matches in Adelaide on November 15 and Hobart on November 18.
According to BBC Sport, the 28-year-old sustained the injury in Pakistan last month and missed the final two matches of the tri-series there. He has taken 46 wickets in 17 matches this year. The BBC reported that he was likely to return for December's three-Test series in South Africa, but that prospect remains an expectation rather than a confirmed recovery date.
On the field, England recovered from a difficult batting position to give their bowlers a defendable total. Sky Sports reported that Harry Brook's team were 150-6 after Sam Curran's dismissal in the 29th over. Will Jacks contributed 34 and Liam Dawson finished unbeaten on 44 as England reached 251 before being dismissed in 48 overs. Brody Couch took 4-47 and Lance Morris returned 3-29 for Western Australia.
Rashid then finished with 4-35 from 7.3 overs, while Archer claimed 3-34 in eight, according to Sky Sports. Their combined seven wickets helped restrict Western Australia to 159. Corey Wasley made 41 and Cameron Bancroft scored 32, but the hosts fell short of the 252 required for victory. Archer had been rested for the ODI tri-series in Pakistan, while Rashid had largely been left out in favour of Dawson.
BBC Sport reported that coach Brendon McCullum wanted a strong ODI side in Australia as England prepare for next year's World Cup in southern Africa. He has also acknowledged the need for rotation during the T20 leg, with five overseas tours on England's winter schedule.
