Josh Kerr Eyes Mile World Record Glory at London Diamond League Following in Bannister Footsteps
Josh Kerr has announced his ambitious intention to shatter the mile world record at July London Diamond League event, drawing inspiration from Roger Bannister historic four-minute barrier breakthrough while seeking to bring the prestigious mark back to British soil.
The Scottish middle-distance star, who describes watching Bannister legendary 1954 performance as making the hairs on the back of his neck tingle, believes the time has arrived to challenge Hicham El-Guerrouj seemingly untouchable record of 3 minutes 43.13 seconds.
This record needs to be brought home, declares the 28-year-old with unmistakable conviction. This is a British record. This is a British distance. And so it would be doing a disservice to the UK to not be doing it at home. Its why I cant do it anywhere else.
Kerr acknowledges the magnitude of his challenge, with his personal best sitting just over two seconds slower than the Moroccan legend mark established in July 1999. However, the world 1500m champion possesses the credentials and preparation strategy that make this ambitious pursuit realistic rather than fanciful.
The comprehensive support system Kerr has assembled reflects the serious nature of his world record attempt, featuring a 16-strong team of specialists covering every conceivable aspect of elite athletic performance and preparation.
Danny is the mastermind behind everything, explains Kerr when describing his head coach Danny Mackey leadership role. He is my head coach and team leader. Then youve got Julian, who is an assistant coach, and my wife, who helps with everything.
The extensive entourage extends far beyond traditional coaching roles, incorporating his mother as head physiotherapist alongside a chiropractor, massage therapist, two strength and conditioning coaches, performance psychologist, nutritionist, and full-time chef to optimize every element of his preparation.
Additional specialists handle social media documentation through a videographer and assistant, while race management falls to agent Ray Flynn and management company Forte, ensuring no detail is overlooked during the record attempt preparation.
Technological advancement plays a crucial role in Kerr strategy, with sponsor Brooks developing a specialized shoe specifically designed for the record attempt. My sponsors Brooks are massively on board, it will be a new shoe that weve been working on for a while, he reveals.
The training methodology focuses on developing muscle memory for the required pace, targeting splits between 55 and 56 seconds per lap to achieve the record-breaking time. Theres a lot of muscle memory with stuff, and so well do a lot of training at pace, Kerr explains.
Were three or four months deep into the mental training of it. Theres a lot going on behind the scenes already. The whole season is towards this.
The pacemaking strategy has been finalized months in advance, with Kerr confirming his pacers are signed, sealed and delivered for the July attempt. Despite the meticulous planning, he insists this will remain a legitimate Diamond League race rather than a controlled time trial.
Im not scared to race people, Kerr notes when addressing potential competition. I think certain athletes will have obligations elsewhere. But its not going to be a closed-off race.
Kerr recent form provides compelling evidence for his record aspirations, including last weekend world indoor 3000m title that demonstrated his exceptional current condition. Ive been in shape to run the record multiple times over the last couple of years, he states confidently.
The venue selection carries deep emotional significance, with the London Stadium expected to accommodate 60,000 spectators providing atmospheric support that could prove crucial during the record attempt.
People say the sport needs more rivalries, Kerr observes while explaining his motivation. I dont agree. I think the sport needs more moments. We need a reason to watch. And so thats where this comes from. This is the time to go after these big moments.
The ambitious timeline provides four months of intensive preparation between now and July, allowing for the physical and mental conditioning necessary to bridge the gap between his current capabilities and world record requirements.
This record is one of the most important we have in track and field, Kerr emphasizes. Theres been multiple times that Danny, Julian and I have sat down and had that conversation. Are we ready for it yet Not quite yet. When is the time The time is now. Its time for that record to be renewed.
