Josh Hokit Shocks Curtis Blaydes at UFC 327, Announces Himself as a Real Heavyweight Threat
Josh Hokit walked into the Kaseya Center in Miami looking like just another heavyweight looking for his moment. He walked out having stolen the entire UFC 327 card.
Hokit defeated Curtis Blaydes via unanimous decision in the main card opener, and in doing so announced himself as a genuine contender in the heavyweight division. For a man with just nine professional fights to his name, this was a statement victory that will not be forgotten anytime soon.
The fight itself was all Hokit from the opening bell. His hand speed was immediately apparent, tagging Blaydes with right hands before the former title challenger could even set up his jab. Early in the fight, it was clear Hokit was the faster man, and he used that advantage to pile up damage throughout all five rounds.
What impressed analysts most was not just the speed, but Hokit composure under fire. Blaydes landed some serious shots, yet Hokit rolled with many of them, showing a comfort level in the cage that belied his inexperience. Even when fatigued late in the fight, he could still burst forward with four-punch combinations that landed with scary accuracy.
The strangest part of the Hokit experience is what surrounds it. Pre-fight, Hokit oscillated between wildly yelling in bizarre accents and nervously whispering to himself about his chances. It was part performance art, part rage bait, and completely impossible to predict. Whether it was a deliberate strategy or genuine eccentricity, it made him impossible to ignore.
Questions remain about his future at heavyweight. Hokit is undersized for the division, and he did not attempt wrestling against the larger Blaydes. A future matchup against Derrick Lewis, already booked for the UFC White House card, will test whether his speed advantage holds against one of the hardest punchers in division history.
There is also a lightweight option worth monitoring. Paulo Costa, a former middleweight who moved up to light heavyweight for UFC 327, weighed roughly the same as Hokit on fight night. If the heavyweights ever prove too large, dropping to 205 pounds would be a viable path.
For now, Hokit and his multiple personalities are here to stay. UFC 327 belonged to him more than anyone else on the card, and the heavyweight division has been put on notice.
