Josh Blake Steers Surrey to One-Wicket Win Over Yorkshire

What happened: Josh Blake carried Surrey through a tense chase of 185 as the county beat Yorkshire by one wicket at the Kia Oval on Friday. Blake finished unbeaten on 43 from 183 balls, while Dan Worrall hit the winning boundary to take Surrey to 187 for nine in the 73rd over. The result gave Surrey 19 points and Yorkshire three.

The ECB Reporters' Network, in a report published by BBC Sport, said Surrey had slipped to 115 for seven before Blake and Matt Fisher changed the contest. Their eighth-wicket partnership added 55 across 23 overs. Fisher made 33 from 59 balls before edging George Hill to third slip with Surrey still 15 runs short.

The finish remained volatile. Auqib Nabi, making his Surrey debut, struck Ben Coad for six but was caught at mid-on from the next delivery, leaving two runs required. Worrall and Blake then went scoreless for 10 balls, including a maiden from Hill in which the bowler repeatedly challenged Blake's outside edge. Worrall finally sliced Coad over square cover for four.

Blake's innings stood out in a match dominated by the ball. The 27-year-old reserve wicketkeeper was playing only his seventh first-class game and appeared as a makeshift top-order batter. He spent four and a half hours at the crease, hit five fours and provided the resistance Surrey needed while wickets continued to fall around him.

Fisher also completed an influential all-round performance against his former county. He had taken six for 25 on the second day, when Yorkshire were dismissed for 82 shortly after Surrey had been bowled out for 83. Yorkshire's first innings had produced 185, meaning Surrey faced the same target in the fourth innings. Hill led Yorkshire's final-day effort with four for 52 from 23 overs.

Why it matters: Surrey moved just above Yorkshire in the County Championship Division One table, strengthening their prospects of avoiding relegation. Yorkshire, meanwhile, were pulled further into the survival fight. The narrow margin and the late loss of Nabi left the outcome unresolved until Worrall's boundary, but Blake's sustained occupation of the crease ultimately anchored Surrey's decisive stand.
