Jordan Hermann Equals ODI Debut Record in South Africa Win

BBC Sport reported that Jordan Hermann equalled the record for the highest score on one-day international debut as South Africa beat Namibia by 99 runs in a rain-affected series opener in Windhoek. The left-handed opener made 150 from 126 balls, providing the foundation for a total of 348 for six before the result was decided under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.

Hermann struck 17 fours and three sixes in an innings that accelerated sharply after a measured start. He reached his first ODI half-century from 61 balls and completed his hundred from 93. His next 50 runs required only 32 deliveries, taking him level with fellow South African Matthew Breetzke, who scored 150 on debut against New Zealand in Lahore in 2025.

Namibia had chosen to field and gained an early breakthrough when Ruben Trumpelmann removed Connor Esterhuizen for 10. Hermann then rebuilt the innings with Tony de Zorzi in a second-wicket partnership worth 190 runs. De Zorzi contributed 72 from 84 balls before the stand ended, while Hermann continued to control the scoring through the middle overs.

Hermann was dismissed at 275 for three in the 42nd over, caught off Trumpelmann one delivery after reaching 150. Dewald Brevis added 33 from 28 balls, and Corbin Bosch supplied late momentum with an unbeaten 39 from 24. Trumpelmann finished with four wickets for 68 runs, the leading return for Namibia in an innings that closed at 348 for six after 50 overs.

The chase was interrupted by rain with Namibia on 76 for three after 21.3 overs. South Africa were awarded the match by 99 runs under the DLS calculation, giving the visitors the opening victory in the three-match ODI series. The shortened second innings limited Namibia's opportunity to pursue the original target, but South Africa's imposing total had already placed the hosts under severe scoreboard pressure.

The innings put Hermann alongside Breetzke as the only batters to reach 150 in a first ODI appearance. Desmond Haynes had held the previous benchmark for decades after making 148 for West Indies against Australia in 1978. For Hermann, the record-equalling performance turned a first ODI cap into the defining contribution of South Africa's victory.
