Jonny Clayton wins Swiss Darts Trophy and secures Grand Slam place
Jonny Clayton beat Luke Humphries 8-4 in Basel to claim his first ranking title of the year and qualify for November’s Grand Slam of Darts.

Jonny Clayton won the Swiss Darts Trophy with an 8-4 victory over Luke Humphries in Basel, securing his first ranking title of the year and a place in November's Grand Slam of Darts. BBC Sport reported that the Welshman settled the final by taking four consecutive legs after the players had reached 4-4.

Watch the highlights:

The final paired world number five Clayton with world number two Humphries, who was seeking another trophy following his recent World Grand Prix success. The match was still level after eight legs, with four more needed to win the title. Clayton took all four, denying Humphries another leg as he completed the victory.

Their scoring averages were almost inseparable: Humphries finished on 101.75, marginally ahead of Clayton's 101.68. The difference came when they had opportunities to finish legs. Clayton converted 61.54% of his checkout attempts, while Humphries managed 22.22%. That gap in finishing efficiency allowed Clayton to win despite his opponent recording the slightly higher average across the final.

Clayton also led the maximum count, hitting six 180s to Humphries' four. Those figures accompanied a decisive closing sequence in which Humphries could not add to his four legs. The outcome gave Clayton both the Euro Tour trophy and qualification for another event, with the Grand Slam berth secured through his victory in Switzerland.

Earlier in the day, Clayton opened his route through the closing rounds with a 6-4 win against Rob Cross in the last 16. He returned for the evening session and defeated Karel Sedlacek 6-2. A 7-4 semi-final success against world number three Gian van Veen then earned him his meeting with Humphries for the title.

Humphries had reached the final through three wins of his own. He did not concede a leg in a 6-0 victory over Krzysztof Ratajski, then beat Cristo Reyes 6-3 before overcoming Mensur Suljovic 7-4 in the semi-finals. His bid to follow the World Grand Prix triumph with the Swiss title ended against Clayton, whose finishing decided the day's last match.
