Jonny Brownlee Retires at 36 After Three Olympic Medals

British triathlete Jonny Brownlee has retired from professional competition at the age of 36, closing a career that brought him medals at three Olympic Games. BBC Sport reported the announcement on Friday, with Brownlee saying he could no longer give elite racing the total commitment that had defined his career.

Brownlee won bronze in the individual event at the London Olympics in 2012 and improved to silver at Rio 2016. He completed his Olympic medal collection at the Tokyo Games, staged in 2021, by helping Britain win the inaugural mixed relay alongside Jessica Learmonth, Georgia Taylor-Brown and Alex Yee.

The British athlete also became a six-time world champion and earned mixed team relay gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Reflecting on his career, Brownlee told BBC Sport that his achievements had exceeded what he once imagined possible and that he was proud of the commitment behind his Olympic performances.

His decision follows the retirement of his older brother Alistair, the two-time individual Olympic champion, who also stepped away at 36 in 2024. The brothers raced alongside one another for much of their careers. One of their most widely remembered moments came at a 2016 World Series race in Mexico, when Alistair supported an exhausted Jonny over the final 700 metres and helped him across the finish line in second place.

Brownlee said becoming a father had helped clarify his priorities. His son Freddie was born 10 months before the announcement, and Brownlee explained that family responsibilities and concern for his body had changed how he viewed the demands and risks of training and racing. He said he no longer wanted to approach professional competition without the full commitment it required.

Retirement will not mean leaving triathlon altogether. Brownlee told BBC Sport that he intends to continue participating and may race more frequently outside the professional circuit. His departure ends an elite career highlighted by three differently coloured Olympic medals, with the mixed relay victory in Tokyo supplying the gold he still wanted before stepping away.
