Jonathan Trott sets winning standard for England Lions and welcomes senior players
Jonathan Trott wants England Lions to treat results as an essential part of developing international players, while opening the programme to established England cricketers seeking to recover their form. In an interview published by the Guardian on Saturday, the head coach outlined how he intends to make the development side useful across different stages of a player's career.
Watch the highlights:
Trott said players should learn to expect to deliver for England whenever they represent the Lions, rather than regard the matches only as opportunities to improve individual skills. He also wants senior internationals who have been dropped or are unhappy with their game to see Lions cricket as a place for demanding, productive coaching.
His approach includes encouraging players to become more independent in their preparation. Trott told the Guardian he wants them to develop interests away from cricket and find their own ways to refresh mentally between matches. He also described adjusting training pressure to the needs and personalities of the players, rather than applying the same demands throughout.
The ECB has confirmed a three-tour winter programme with a particular emphasis on 50-over cricket. Performance director Ed Barney said that focus was intended to prepare the players next in line for England's one-day international side. First-class fixtures are also included, giving the programme a red-ball component alongside its white-ball work rather than restricting it to a single format.
The published itinerary runs from October 27 to November 21 in the West Indies, with T20 and one-day series. South Africa follows from November 25 to December 23, before a Sri Lanka trip from February 18 to March 14, 2027. Both of those tours include one-day and first-class cricket.
Trott, 45, previously spent four years coaching Afghanistan, overseeing their first men's T20 World Cup semi-final appearance in 2024. The ECB also noted his earlier work as an England assistant during the pandemic and his recent spell leading the Lions to a 2-0 T20 series victory over Sri Lanka. His England playing career included 52 Tests and 75 white-ball appearances.
