Jonas Vingegaard Ends 2026 Season to Recover From Tour de France Crash
Jonas Vingegaard will not race again this season as he continues to recover from the broken collarbone he suffered during the Tour de France. BBC Sport reported that the 29-year-old Visma-Lease a Bike rider and his team have decided to focus on rebuilding toward 2027 rather than attempting a return during the remaining months of 2026.
Watch the highlights:
The crash happened on stage 15 of the Tour. Vingegaard was negotiating a tight right-hand turn after a roundabout when his front wheel lost grip, sending him down onto his shoulder. The injury required surgery and ended his effort to win the Tour for a third time. Tadej Pogacar went on to claim a record-equalling fifth yellow jersey.
Vingegaard's season-ending decision also removes him from the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal, Canada, in September. Pogacar is scheduled to pursue a third consecutive world title there. Vingegaard said a recovery period had already been planned after a long and demanding block of racing, but the collarbone injury delayed his return to training and left too little time to regain top condition.
The Dane entered the Tour after a major achievement earlier in the season. He won the Giro d'Italia and became only the eighth male rider to complete victories in all three Grand Tours: the Giro, Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana. His Tour crash therefore brought an abrupt end to a campaign in which he had already added a historic result to his record.
Visma-Lease a Bike head of racing Marc Reef said the team had always planned to review the second half of Vingegaard's schedule after the Tour. According to Reef, the rider's large number of race days in 2026, combined with the collarbone fracture, made concentrating on next season the best option. The team will now work with Vingegaard on a suitable training build-up.
Specific objectives for 2027 have not yet been announced. Vingegaard said he will discuss those targets with the team during the coming period, while making an optimal preparation for next year the immediate priority. The decision means his 2026 competitive record ends with the Giro triumph and the unfinished Tour, with rehabilitation now taking precedence over a late-season comeback.
