Joe Root Begins Second England Test Captaincy Stint Against Pakistan
Joe Root will start his second spell as England Test captain when the first match of a three-Test series against Pakistan begins at Headingley on Wednesday. BBC Sport reported that the 35-year-old has succeeded Ben Stokes, who announced his international retirement earlier this summer. Root said England must represent the country well and respond to recent problems through their conduct and performances.
Watch the highlights:
The leadership change follows a difficult period for the Test side. Brendon McCullum was dismissed as coach after England won only two of 10 Tests, a sequence that included a 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia and a 2-1 home series loss to New Zealand. BBC Sport reported that off-field incidents also affected the team during those tours and the summer, while Stokes' retirement formed part of six turbulent weeks.
Stephen Fleming has been appointed as McCullum's successor, but batting coach Marcus Trescothick will oversee the Test team on an interim basis throughout the Pakistan series. Root returns to a role he held from 2017 to 2022, when he captained England in 65 Tests. He has a national-record 27 Test wins as captain, alongside 27 defeats, which is also an England record.
Root, England's leading Test batter and a veteran of 166 matches, told BBC Sport that his natural manner could help bring calm to the side. He acknowledged that he cannot simply reproduce Stokes' leadership because his predecessor offered distinctive qualities. Root instead wants England to become more versatile while retaining and refining successful elements of the attacking approach used during the Stokes-McCullum era.
England had not confirmed their starting XI on Tuesday. BBC Sport reported that Surrey all-rounder Dan Lawrence was expected to take the number-six position previously occupied by Stokes and provide a spin-bowling option. The selectors must also choose a four-player pace attack from Ollie Robinson, Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue, Gus Atkinson, Sam Cook, Brydon Carse and Matt Fisher.
Pakistan will be without captain Babar Azam for the opening Test after he was struck on the hand during a warm-up match last week. Salman Ali Agha will lead the visitors in his absence. For England, the Headingley match offers the first competitive measure of Root's revised approach and begins the immediate transition from Stokes and McCullum under Trescothick's temporary coaching leadership.
