Joe Root Falls Four Runs Short of Century in Solid Start to Yorkshire Season

Joe Root marked his return to county cricket with an impressive yet frustrating knock, falling just four runs short of a deserving century as Yorkshire took on Warwickshire in their County Championship fixture at Headingley. The England Test captain, back in familiar surroundings after the international winter, looked in superb touch before being dismissed for 96, leaving the home crowd wondering what might have been.

Root's innings was a blend of classical technique and attacking intent, compiling 14 boundaries during his 127-ball stay at the crease. His driving through the off-side was particularly fluent, and he punished anything loose from the Warwickshire attack with the kind of authority that has made him one of the world's premier batsmen. He had looked set for a big score until a delivery from England hopeful Jake Goodwin jagged back to trap him lbw.

"Four runs... it's one of those things," Root reflected after the innings. "I felt good at the crease, got some good deliveries to hit, and was rotating strike nicely. It's always nice to get time in the middle, and the conditions were good for batting. I'll take the 96 and move on to the next innings."

The dismissal was a bitter pill to swallow for Root, who had passed 50 in each of his previous three Test innings against New Zealand before the domestic season began. His contribution helped Yorkshire reach 287-4 at stumps, with the county sitting comfortably placed in their pursuit of maximum batting points.
