Joe Root Sets England Priorities at Start of Second Captaincy Spell
Joe Root has called on England's players to set strong standards on and off the field as he begins his second spell as Test captain. Speaking before the first Test against Pakistan at Headingley, Root said he wants the team to be good role models and human beings while building a new identity under his leadership.
Watch the highlights:
BBC Sport reported that Root has succeeded Ben Stokes, who announced his international retirement earlier this summer. Root previously captained England in 65 Tests between 2017 and 2022, giving him extensive experience as he takes charge again during a period of wider change around the side.
Root acknowledged that one of his main challenges will be resisting any attempt to copy Stokes. He described his predecessor as a unique player whose qualities cannot easily be replicated and said England will have a slightly different look. While the team became known for aggressive cricket under Stokes and former coach Brendon McCullum, Root said he wants the next version of England to be versatile.
The leadership transition also extends to the coaching staff. According to the BBC, McCullum was dismissed as head coach after England's difficult summer. Stephen Fleming has been appointed as his successor, but batting coach Marcus Trescothick will oversee the Test team on an interim basis for the three-match Pakistan series.
Root did not name England's starting XI on Tuesday. The BBC said Surrey all-rounder Dan Lawrence is expected to fill Stokes' position at number six and provide a spin-bowling option. England must also select a four-player pace attack from Ollie Robinson, Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue, Gus Atkinson, Sam Cook, Brydon Carse and Matt Fisher.
Pakistan will also begin the match with a significant change. The touring side confirmed that captain Babar Azam is unavailable for the first Test after being struck on the hand during a warm-up game last week. Salman Ali Agha will captain Pakistan in his absence when the match begins on Wednesday, August 19.
