Joe Root Backs Experience to Solve Repeated LBW Dismissals

Joe Root says he trusts his experience to resolve a recurring leg-before-wicket problem after England completed a series win over Pakistan at Lord’s. BBC Sport reports that the England captain has been dismissed lbw nine times in his past seven Tests, including seven times during the home summer, but remains confident that he can adjust.

Root has passed 50 only twice this summer and is averaging 29.44, the second-lowest home-season average of his 14-year international career. Even so, the 35-year-old pointed to a Test record that has produced 14,208 runs. Only India’s Sachin Tendulkar has scored more in the format. Root told the BBC he was “not too concerned” and said his career showed he had repeatedly found answers to technical challenges.

The recent pattern began when Australia’s Jhye Richardson trapped Root in the second innings of the Boxing Day Test. Since then, pace bowlers have dismissed him lbw nine times in 12 innings. According to the BBC’s analysis, the specific threat has come from right-arm seamers pitching outside off stump and moving the ball back into him. None of those nine wickets was taken by a bowler operating at particularly high pace.

Root also cited difficult batting conditions in Britain this summer, where the ball has moved significantly. He suggested Dukes balls had behaved differently, including what he perceived as a change to the lacquer and a greater tendency to dent playing surfaces. Dukes denied to the BBC that it had altered its manufacturing process.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan acknowledged that the frequency of the dismissals had become an issue, but backed Root to correct it as he has with previous problems. Root said he would continue working and adapting, stressing that international cricket constantly requires players to evolve rather than assuming past success guarantees future runs.

England’s 194-run victory in the second Test at Lord’s meant Root’s lean spell did not prevent a team success. The result completed a series win over Pakistan, gave him two victories from two matches at the start of his second spell as captain and secured England’s first series triumph since 2024. Root urged his players to celebrate the achievement sensibly after the match.
