Joe Rodon Hamstring Injury Puts Wales Nations League Start in Doubt

Joe Rodon has emerged as a major doubt for Wales’ opening Nations League matches after suffering a hamstring injury during Leeds United’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Brentford at Elland Road. The centre-back was forced off after 33 minutes on Sunday, leaving Wales manager Craig Bellamy with another potential defensive absence ahead of September’s internationals.

BBC Sport reported that Rodon pulled up sharply following a challenge and immediately signalled to the Leeds bench that he needed to be replaced. The 28-year-old was then helped from the field. Leeds manager Daniel Farke confirmed after the match that the problem involved Rodon’s hamstring, but no recovery timetable has been established.

Farke described the injury as painful and said it would be a significant blow if Rodon faces an extended spell out. The Leeds manager said the club must assess the defender and expressed hope that the absence will not be lengthy. He also pointed to the limited number of senior centre-back options currently available to his squad.

Rodon’s early departure came before Brentford took the lead through Kevin Schade. Leeds later secured a point when Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored a late equaliser. The result left the immediate focus on Rodon’s condition, with the extent of the injury still uncertain pending the club’s assessment.

The timing also creates concern for Wales. Rodon has won 62 caps and has been a regular under Bellamy, whose team are due to visit Portugal on 24 September before travelling to Denmark on 27 September. His potential absence would further reduce Bellamy’s defensive choices for the two Nations League fixtures.

Cardiff City centre-back Dylan Lawlor is also expected to be unavailable because of a knee injury, according to the BBC report. Rodon has not yet been formally ruled out of either Wales match, and the assessment by Leeds will determine whether he can join the national squad. Until that process is complete, his status for both September games remains in doubt.
