Joe Dean Fires Closing 63 to Win British Masters

Joe Dean produced a bogey-free final-round 63 to win the British Masters at The Belfry on Sunday, securing the first DP World Tour title of his career. BBC Sport reported that the 32-year-old Englishman began the day seven shots behind overnight leader Dan Hillier but finished at 14 under par, three strokes clear of a four-player group.

Dean accelerated into contention with four birdies across his opening six holes. He added five more on the back nine and converted a 10-foot birdie putt at the 18th to complete a nine-under round. With several groups still on the course, he then waited about 90 minutes before the result was confirmed.

Jacob Skov Olesen, Niklas Norgaard, Nacho Elvira and Hillier shared second place at 11 under. Olesen and Norgaard each closed with a 71, Elvira shot 69 and Hillier signed for a 73. Hillier's challenge was damaged by a double bogey at the sixth, although he recovered two shots with birdies on the back nine.

Marco Penge also moved into the lead during the final round after completing his delayed third round on Sunday morning. According to BBC Sport, five birdies and two bogeys over his first nine holes briefly put him one ahead. His charge faded late, however, with bogeys at the 17th and 18th leaving him on 10 under after a closing 72.

Fabrizio Zanotti made another late push, reaching 12 under after four birdies in five holes on the back nine. A triple bogey at the last, where BBC Sport reported that he needed two shots to escape a fairway bunker before finding water, dropped him to nine under.

The tournament lost more than nine hours of play to stormy conditions across Thursday and Friday, forcing the schedule to be compressed. Dean nevertheless delivered the decisive round in his 70th DP World Tour start. The victory also followed a notable summer in which he won the Last Chance Qualifier for the Open Championship and took the final place in the field at Royal Birkdale.
