Jim McGuinness Reappointed as Donegal Manager for 2027 Season

Jim McGuinness has been reappointed as manager of Donegal's senior football team for the 2027 season. BBC Sport reported the decision on Monday, confirming that the coming campaign will be the fourth year of McGuinness' second spell in charge of the county.

The continuation activates the fourth-year option attached to the agreement announced when McGuinness returned in August 2023. Donegal GAA said at that time that his appointment covered three years with the option of a fourth, making the latest decision a continuation of the structure established at the start of his comeback.

McGuinness previously managed Donegal from 2011 through 2014 and guided the county to the All-Ireland senior football title in 2012. During that first tenure, Donegal also won three Ulster championships. He stepped down after the county's defeat by Kerry in the 2014 All-Ireland final.

His return followed a difficult 2023 season for Donegal, during which Paddy Carr resigned and Aidan O'Rourke later served as interim manager. BBC Sport reported when McGuinness was appointed that former Donegal players Neil McGee and Colm McFadden were named to his backroom team, alongside Luke Barrett.

In the second spell, McGuinness led Donegal to consecutive Ulster titles in 2024 and 2025. The team also reached the 2025 All-Ireland final, where Kerry won at Croke Park. Donegal then claimed the 2026 Division One league title, defeating Kerry 3-20 to 2-10 in the final for the county's first National Football League crown in 19 years.

The 2026 championship brought a different set of results. Donegal lost their Ulster quarter-final at home to Down, then later recorded victories over Kerry during the All-Ireland series before defeats by Cork and Dublin ended their championship campaign, according to HoganStand's account of the season. McGuinness' reappointment now provides continuity as Donegal prepare for 2027, while HoganStand reported that changes to his backroom team are expected before the new campaign.
