Jets erase four-goal deficit to beat Canadiens and end nine-game skid
The Winnipeg Jets recovered from a 4-0 deficit with less than three minutes remaining in regulation to defeat the Montreal Canadiens 5-4 in overtime on Tuesday. Dylan Samberg scored the winner as Winnipeg ended a nine-game losing streak, according to Associated Press reporting. The result turned a late Montreal lead into a victory for a team that had been facing a 10th consecutive defeat.
Watch the highlights:
Cole Caufield had put the Canadiens four goals ahead with his second goal of the night, scored 46 seconds into the third period. That was his 10th goal of the season. Montreal still held that advantage deep into the period before Tyrel Bauer and Morgan Barron scored to begin Winnipeg's recovery.
Kyle Connor then supplied the two goals that brought Winnipeg level, with the equalizer coming on a power play in the closing minute. Samberg completed the turnaround at 3:30 of overtime. Sportsnet reported that the rally was the latest four-goal comeback victory in NHL history and that the third-period burst produced the fastest four goals in Jets franchise history.
Bauer's contribution extended beyond getting Winnipeg on the scoreboard. The Canadian Press reported that his goal, with 2:39 remaining, was the first of his NHL career. He also assisted on Barron's goal at 18:03, completing a Gordie Howe hat trick: a goal, an assist and a fight. His part in the comeback gave the Jets a breakthrough before Connor took over the scoring.
Montreal's reaction focused on the performance behind the lead as well as the collapse itself. According to The Canadian Press, Caufield accepted that there was no excuse for losing after building a four-goal advantage. Coach Martin St. Louis said Winnipeg had been the better team across the game, even while the Canadiens were ahead on the scoreboard.
For Winnipeg, the win followed a 7-0 defeat by the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday. Coach Scott Arniel said he hoped the result would help restart his team's season, The Canadian Press reported. He noted that the Jets had entered the Montreal game four points outside a Western Conference playoff place, while stressing that the campaign was still in its early stages.
