Jesus de Miguel funeral held as family thanks football community for support
The funeral of Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel took place on Thursday in Navahermosa, Toledo, as his family thanked those who had offered support following his death. BBC Sport reported that leading figures in Spanish football attended the service for the 30-year-old, who died after suffering a serious injury during a second division match earlier in the week.
Watch the highlights:
De Miguel was injured in Monday's game against FC Andorra after a collision with goalkeeper Jesus Owono. Medical staff treated him on the pitch before he was taken to hospital, where he died at 07:00 GMT on Tuesday. The match was abandoned and Owono was sent off for the challenge. De Miguel, who had joined Tenerife in the summer of 2025, was a father of one.
The service was held in his parents' hometown, about 125 kilometres from Madrid. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente was among those present, along with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin. Former Real Madrid and Spain coach Jose Antonio Camacho also attended, according to BBC Sport's account of the funeral.
De Miguel's agent, Manuel Hernandez, released a statement on behalf of the family expressing gratitude for the messages, calls and other gestures they had received. The family said the affection shown towards him, and the effect he had on other people's lives, would remain with them. They also spoke of the memories shared with him while acknowledging the depth of their loss.
Supporters had already gathered at Tenerife's Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez, where Monday's match was played. In the hours after his death was announced, mourners placed flowers and lit candles beneath a black-and-white image of the forward. Football's tributes have also included a minute's silence at matches in European competitions this week. In a statement released by Andorra on Wednesday, Owono expressed his sorrow and said he was thinking of De Miguel, his family and those close to him.
Alongside their thanks, the family asked that their privacy, and that of the people supporting them, be respected. They said they needed peace and quiet in which to grieve, while expressing appreciation for the concern and affection shown since De Miguel's death.
