Jemma Reekie Eyes Double Distance Challenge at Commonwealth Games After Embracing Mile Competition at World Indoor Championships
The Scottish middle-distance runner hopes to compete in both 800m and mile events in Glasgow while preparing for this weekend's World Indoor Championships in Torun with no pressure.

Jemma Reekie has revealed her ambitious plans to compete in both the 800 meters and mile at this summer's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, as the Scottish middle-distance star continues exploring longer distances while maintaining her signature event expertise.

The two-time Olympian approaches this weekend's World Indoor Championships in Torun with a refreshing perspective, emphasizing enjoyment over results as she tests her capabilities in the 1500 meters during Friday's heats before Sunday's final.

I've got no pressure this weekend at all, other than myself, Reekie explained about her World Indoor ambitions. So, I'm just going to go out there and have fun and see what I can do.

The mile is a really cool event and it's nice to do something different, she continued, describing her recent venture into longer distances. I'm not moving up full time, I'm going to go back to the 800m outdoors.

Reekie's strategic approach reflects lessons learned from recent setbacks, particularly her failure to reach the 2024 Olympic 800m final, which prompted significant reflection about her career trajectory and mental health priorities.

The past two outdoor seasons I've missed out on finals, so that'll definitely be the first step forward to get into that final, she acknowledged about her immediate goals for the World Indoor Championships.

Working alongside coach Jon Bigg since March 2023, Reekie has embraced a holistic approach to performance enhancement that extends beyond traditional training methods, incorporating sports psychology and other marginal gains specialists into her support network.

I've been with Jon for a while now, and we've been working on lots and I've got stronger and stronger as the years have gone by, she reflected. It's just adding in those one per cent gains and new people to your team, which I'm really enjoying.

Reekie's partnership with fellow Team GB star Laura Muir under Bigg's guidance has created a supportive training environment that encourages experimentation and risk-taking, essential elements for athletes seeking breakthrough performances.

I think in the future I might be a great 1500m runner, Reekie suggested about her long-term potential. So, I'm kind of dipping my toes in to see how it goes. I'm enjoying it, the training's really good.

Her Commonwealth Games ambitions reflect growing confidence in her versatility across middle-distance events, with the Glasgow venue providing an ideal stage for showcasing her expanded range in front of home supporters.

The combination of 800m speed and mile tactical awareness could prove formidable at Commonwealth level, where Reekie's experience and fitness base should translate effectively across both distances during what promises to be a demanding competition schedule.

Reekie spoke candidly about prioritizing mental health following her 2024 Olympic disappointment, demonstrating maturity in addressing performance pressures while maintaining competitive ambition at the highest level.

I think athletes always can work on something, she noted about continuous improvement, highlighting the mindset that has enabled her recovery from setback and renewed enthusiasm for competition.

Her current form heading into Torun suggests positive trajectory following indoor preparation that has emphasized both physical conditioning and mental resilience, crucial components for championship success.

It's definitely getting there, Reekie assessed her current fitness. We'll see how I go this weekend over that distance. I'm definitely having a lot of fun, and that's the main aim.

The World Indoor Championships represent an important stepping stone toward her Commonwealth Games objectives, providing valuable racing experience at championship intensity while testing her tactical adaptation to 1500m competition.

Reekie's ability to balance ambition with enjoyment could prove key to unlocking performances that have eluded her during recent outdoor seasons, when pressure and expectation may have hindered natural running ability.

Her willingness to experiment with distances demonstrates confidence in her athletic development while suggesting potential for breakthrough performances when pressure diminishes and natural talent can flourish unencumbered.
