Jamie Carragher apologises to Aston Villa after podcast comments
Jamie Carragher has apologised to Aston Villa, their owners and supporters for his language about the club. The apology follows Villa's announcement that they intended to take legal action.

Jamie Carragher has apologised to Aston Villa, the club's owners and supporters after comments about Unai Emery and Manchester United prompted Villa to announce plans for legal action. BBC Sport reported that the former England defender issued the apology on social media on Saturday, acknowledging that the language he had used during the week was “clumsy and wrong”.

Watch the highlights:

Villa had said on Friday that they would initiate legal action over remarks they characterised as “unacceptable insults”. Their statement was signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris and referred to Carragher's appearance on the Stick to Football podcast. The club's response came after the pundit discussed whether Emery would want the opportunity to manage Manchester United and addressed Villa supporters in dismissive terms.

During that discussion, Carragher argued that football has a hierarchy in which clubs can lose players or managers to teams with greater standing. He used Cristiano Ronaldo's move from Manchester United to Real Madrid as an example, before suggesting Villa could similarly recruit from clubs below them. He also told Villa fans to be quiet, using an expletive, and asserted that their club would never match United's status.

Carragher's Saturday statement sought to explain his intention while accepting that the remarks had not been received as he intended. He described them as “tongue in cheek” but acknowledged why supporters had interpreted them differently. The apology explicitly addressed the club and its ownership as well as the fans, following the criticism of his podcast appearance and Villa's announced response.

Before issuing that apology, Carragher had already responded to criticism from Villa supporters on social media. He said the instruction to be quiet had been a joke and pointed to his previous praise for both Emery and Villa. According to BBC Sport, he argued that he had spoken positively about the manager and the club over several years.

Carragher also revisited the discussion on the Overlap Daily podcast, again saying his message to supporters was intended humorously. He described Emery as the Premier League's best manager and framed his comments around which coach Manchester United might consider. His remarks concerned his assessment of Emery, rather than an announcement of a managerial move.
