James Tavernier Set to Depart Rangers After Decade of Service as Captain Eyes New Challenge Abroad
Rangers captain James Tavernier has informed the club he will not renew his contract expiring this summer, ending an 11-year tenure that saw him lift multiple trophies and become the club's record goalscoring defender.

Rangers captain James Tavernier has confirmed his intention to leave Glasgow following the conclusion of this season, bringing an end to an 11-year association with the club that saw him establish himself as one of the Scottish Premiership's most consistent performers.

Watch the highlights:

The 32-year-old right-back informed manager Philippe Clement of his decision during discussions this week, citing a desire for a 'new challenge' as his primary motivation. Multiple clubs in England, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia have already registered interest in the free agent.

'This has been the hardest decision of my career,' Tavernier said in a statement released through his representatives. 'Rangers gave me the opportunity to become the player and person I am today. I leave with incredible memories, but I feel the time is right to test myself in a different environment.'

During his decade at Ibrox, Tavernier accumulated 422 appearances and scored 67 goals - remarkable figures for a defender that saw him become a cult hero among the Rangers support. He captainored the side to the 2021 Scottish Premiership title that ended Celtic's nine-in-a-row streak, as well as guiding the team to the Europa League final in 2022.

Manager Philippe Clement expressed disappointment but understanding: 'James has been phenomenal for this club. We tried to convince him to stay, but I respect his decision. He deserves to finish his Rangers chapter on his own terms.'

Potential destinations include newly-promoted English Premier League side Ipswich Town, where Tavernier previously had informal discussions two years ago, and Turkish clubs Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, both of whom have tracked the defender extensively. A consortium from the Saudi Pro League has also made preliminary contact.

Rangers must now identify replacements, with Celtic's Anthony Ralston and Motherwell's Jimmy Thompson among the Scottish targets mentioned. Clement has also been linked with English defender James Justin, currently at Leicester City. Tavernier's final appearance for Rangers could come in the Scottish Cup final should they defeat Celtic in the semi-final scheduled for April 27th. 'Whatever happens in the coming weeks, I will give everything until the last minute I wear this jersey,' Tavernier added. 'The fans deserve that and so does this club.'
