James Anderson faces uncertain future after Lancashire contract decision
James Anderson has not been offered a new Lancashire contract, leaving the next stage of the 44-year-old fast bowler's career uncertain, BBC Sport reported on Wednesday. The decision, first reported by The Times, means England's leading wicket-taker will not continue with the county under a new deal for 2027, when he turns 45.

The report does not establish that Anderson has retired. BBC Sport said it was unclear whether he would stop playing or seek a move to another county, and Lancashire had not commented. It also reported that people close to Anderson were unaware of the situation as news of his departure began emerging on Wednesday. His international career ended in 2024, but he subsequently continued in county cricket.
Anderson's uncertain future follows a season in which his own results stood out despite Lancashire's difficulties. He collected 50 County Championship wickets in 2026, with only six bowlers in Division Two taking more, and received Lancashire's Championship player-of-the-year award. He also captained the side, which finished second from bottom in the division. After deputising as captain during 2025, he had taken the role permanently for 2026.
The contract decision comes during a broader examination of Lancashire's cricket operations. According to the BBC, interim chair Dame Sarah Storey and new chief executive Richard Kenyon are leading that review. Paul Farbrace was appointed director of cricket earlier this month. The report gave no explanation from Lancashire for the decision concerning Anderson, whose association with the county's first team began in 2001.
Across his first-class career, Anderson has taken 1,193 wickets, including 443 for Lancashire. His county record also includes 83 List A wickets and 50 in Twenty20 cricket. He first appeared in top-level cricket for Lancashire Cricket Board in 2000, aged 17, beginning a professional career that has lasted 26 years.
For England, Anderson finished with 704 Test wickets from 188 appearances and 991 international wickets across formats. His final Test was against West Indies at Lord's in 2024, followed by a brief stint as England's bowling consultant. He signed another Lancashire deal in 2025 and suggested then that he could play county cricket for three more seasons. Whether he now continues elsewhere remains unresolved.
