Jak Jones Ousts Judd Trump to Reach British Open Final

BBC Sport reports that Jak Jones defeated Judd Trump 6-3 in the British Open semifinals, earning a place in the title match against Mark Selby. The Welsh player converted an early advantage into one of the tournament's most notable results, overcoming Trump's mid-match recovery to close out the contest in nine frames.

Jones established a 3-1 lead with breaks of 95 and 68. Those contributions gave the 2024 World Championship runner-up control before the interval, but the match changed when Trump won the next two frames and pulled level at 3-3. At that stage, the semifinal had become a best-of-five-frame contest.

Jones answered the pressure with breaks of 59 and 52, moving two frames from parity to a 5-3 advantage. The ninth frame developed into a lengthy battle rather than a quick scoring exchange. BBC Sport reported that Trump missed a green during the colours, and Jones completed the frame to secure the 6-3 victory.

The result sends Jones into the final against Selby, who defeated Liam Highfield by the same score in the earlier semifinal. Highfield, appearing in his first ranking-event semifinal, took the opening frame. Selby responded with a break of 85 and later moved ahead 3-2, but Highfield made a 56 to draw level once more at 3-3.

Selby then won three consecutive frames to finish the match 6-3 and advance to the 40th ranking-event final of his career. According to BBC Sport, the four-time world champion could rise from fourth to second in the world rankings if he wins the British Open title. Selby also credited Highfield's safety play after a match that remained competitive through its first six frames.

The final pairs Jones' momentum from an upset of Trump with Selby's experience across four decades of ranking-event title matches. Jones has already responded to one major swing in this tournament, recovering after his lead disappeared, while Selby produced a decisive late run of his own. Their meeting will decide the British Open champion after both finalists separated from their semifinal opponents by winning the closing three frames.
