Jaissle accepts responsibility as Newcastle struggle for confidence
Matthias Jaissle accepted responsibility for Newcastle United's performance and acknowledged a lack of confidence in his squad after supporters booed the team following Monday's 1-0 home defeat by Everton. According to BBC Sport's reporting from St James' Park, the Newcastle manager said he understood the crowd's reaction and called for unity after a fourth defeat in six Premier League matches.

Jaissle said Newcastle had not played with enough courage in possession and had resorted to too many long passes. He described confidence problems affecting experienced players as well as younger members of the squad. Although he disputed the decision to allow Everton's goal, arguing there had been a foul on Fabian Schar during the build-up, he also accepted that Newcastle's overall display had not merited victory.
Thierno Barry scored the winner after goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek failed to hold a shot, while Newcastle substitute Jacob Ramsey was sent off. The result followed Everton's elimination of Newcastle from the Carabao Cup on Thursday, leaving Jaissle's team with two defeats against the same opponents in less than a week. Newcastle have 11 points from nine league fixtures and sit in the bottom half of the table.
The attacking figures underline the difficulties Jaissle identified. BBC Sport reported that Newcastle had 17 attempts against Everton but put only two on target. Across all competitions, they have scored once from their past 47 shots, while their Premier League total stands at 12 goals from nine games. Captain Dan Burn said the side had not been decisive enough either in attack or when defending its own penalty area.
Newcastle's defensive problems also extended a club record: they have now gone 14 consecutive home league matches without a clean sheet. No Premier League team has suffered more home defeats in 2026 than Newcastle's seven. They have also lost 16 of their past 18 league games in which they conceded the opening goal, according to the BBC report.
Jaissle, three months into a four-year contract, said his staff would examine the performance in detail before the trip to Fulham on Saturday. Burn also acknowledged nervousness among supporters and the difficulty of restoring confidence during a losing run. Both men's comments focused on shortcomings within the team as Newcastle seek a response before the November international break.
