Jacob Ramsey’s Late Equalizer Rescues Newcastle Against Bournemouth

Jacob Ramsey scored an 88th-minute equalizer as Newcastle United came back from two goals down to earn a 2-2 Premier League draw against Bournemouth at St James’ Park on Saturday. The Guardian reported that the substitute’s low finish denied Bournemouth their first victory under manager Marco Rose after the visitors had controlled much of the opening half.

Bournemouth went ahead in the ninth minute through Marcus Tavernier. Alex Scott’s deflected attempt dropped into Tavernier’s path, and he reacted quickly to beat Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek. Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle argued that Adrien Truffert had fouled Anthony Elanga during the buildup, but a VAR review found no offense and the goal stood.

The visitors continued to create opportunities through their pressing and doubled the lead after the half-hour mark. Justin Kluivert’s long-range shot struck the frame of the goal and Hornicek before the ball reached Scott. His subsequent cross-shot was diverted beyond his own goalkeeper by Newcastle defender Malick Thiaw.

Newcastle responded in less than two minutes. Harvey Barnes moved inside from the left and curled a shot beyond Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, reducing the deficit before halftime. The goal gave the home side a route back into a match in which Bournemouth had threatened to build a larger advantage.

Jaissle’s team improved after the interval and nearly leveled when Joe Willock sent a glancing header narrowly wide following a Yoane Wissa cross and an Elanga touch. Newcastle also gave a debut to Matias Fernandez-Pardo, introduced shortly after the hour in an attacking role behind Wissa following his move from Lille.

Bournemouth remained in front until the closing minutes but could not clear the aftermath of a Jacob Murphy cross. The loose ball eventually reached Ramsey, another Newcastle substitute, who drove a clean low shot into the bottom corner. The result extended Newcastle’s run without a Premier League victory over Bournemouth to nine meetings, while Rose’s side again surrendered a lead late in a league match.
