Jacob Fearnley Completes Five-Set US Open Comeback Against Martin Landaluce

Jacob Fearnley recovered from the brink of defeat to beat Martin Landaluce in five sets and reach the second round of the US Open on Monday. The Briton won 4-6, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 after four hours and 13 minutes on Court 12, according to reporting from BBC Sport and Britain's Lawn Tennis Association.

The first-round match had started on Sunday but was interrupted during the opening set, requiring the players to return the following day. Landaluce completed the first set before Fearnley responded by taking the second in a little over 30 minutes. The Spaniard then recovered from 3-1 down in the third set and moved back in front.

Fearnley, who entered the main draw as a lucky loser, trailed 5-2 in the fourth set as Landaluce closed in on victory. The LTA reported that the 25-year-old Briton then broke serve three consecutive times and won five games in a row to force a deciding set. Landaluce had served for the match twice during the turnaround.

The momentum remained with Fearnley in the fifth set. He moved 5-1 ahead before Landaluce recovered one break, but Fearnley served out the match to love at his second opportunity. The victory sent him into the US Open second round for a second consecutive year. He will next play Argentina's 27th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

Harriet Dart also advanced for Britain after producing a three-set comeback against American Peyton Stearns. Dart was a set and a break behind before winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. She broke Stearns three times in the deciding set to record her first Grand Slam main-draw victory of the 2026 season.

Dart's result matched her best previous run at Flushing Meadows and earned a second-round meeting with 25th seed Marie Bouzkova. The two British victories followed different routes: Dart recovered within three sets, while Fearnley had to reverse a two-sets-to-one deficit and survive Landaluce's chances to serve out the contest.

For Fearnley, the result extended a tournament run that began in qualifying before he received a place in the main draw as a lucky loser. Landaluce, ranked 65th in the world according to the LTA report, had controlled long stretches of the match. Fearnley's late sequence of breaks changed the outcome and secured his place in the next round.
