Jackson double ends Manchester City's winning start as Villa prevail 2-1
Nicolas Jackson scored twice as Aston Villa beat Manchester City 2-1 at Villa Park on Saturday, ending the visitors' winning start to the Premier League season. City had won their first seven league matches under Enzo Maresca, but Erling Haaland's equaliser was not enough to extend that run.
Watch the highlights:
BBC Sport's account identified John McGinn's intervention against Marc Guehi as the source of Villa's opening goal. McGinn supplied Jackson, who finished high into the net. Guehi was later booked for bringing down the striker near the penalty area and was replaced at half-time, with Rico Lewis coming on.
TNT Sports' match data recorded Jackson's goals in the sixth and 60th minutes, either side of Haaland's header early in the second half. The equaliser came from an Iliman Ndiaye cross. Corriere dello Sport's live commentary recorded that the move followed a free-kick, with Haaland heading in from close range.
Villa's decisive second goal followed a change on the wing. Ibrahim Mbaye replaced Alysson and delivered the low cross that Jackson converted, according to BBC Sport. The substitute's contribution restored the home side's advantage after City had brought the score back to 1-1, leaving the visitors chasing another equaliser.
Zion Suzuki helped protect Villa's lead with saves against Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki and Josko Gvardiol. Ndiaye also hit the post. The final defensive intervention came from Ian Maatsen, whose late headed clearance denied a goalbound Haaland header. Jackson was replaced by Brian Madjo in the 82nd minute.
City's official team announcement had confirmed four returning starters: Haaland, Guehi, Jeremy Doku and Ndiaye. Phil Foden and Lewis began on the bench after starting the midweek 5-1 Champions League victory over AEK Athens. Both entered at half-time against Villa, with Foden replacing Cherki as City changed their line-up.
The result also continued Villa's recent success in this fixture. Manchester City's own pre-match account recorded defeats in both league meetings last season: 1-0 at Villa Park and 2-1 in the reverse fixture. Saturday's score therefore made it three consecutive Premier League victories for Villa against City.
