U.S. Amateur Champion Jack Whaley Earns GB&I Walker Cup Place
Jack Whaley has been named in Great Britain and Ireland's 10-man Walker Cup team after winning the U.S. Amateur Championship at Merion. The biennial match against the United States will be played at Lahinch on September 5-6.

Jack Whaley has been named in Great Britain and Ireland's 10-man Walker Cup team, completing a rapid double reward for his U.S. Amateur Championship victory. BBC Sport reported the selection on Tuesday, two days after the English golfer won the 36-hole final at Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania.

Whaley defeated American Jay Leng Jr 4 and 3 in Sunday's championship match. Golf Monthly reported that he began the afternoon portion two holes behind, then won four of the first five holes after the break to move ahead. A birdie at the 33rd hole secured the title with three holes still to play.

The result gave Whaley a direct route into the Great Britain and Ireland lineup. The R&A's published selection policy reserved a place for the reigning U.S. Amateur champion, provided the winner was eligible to represent the team. Whaley therefore joins the squad without relying on the World Amateur Golf Ranking positions or a captain's selection.

The Walker Cup will be staged at Lahinch Golf Club in Ireland on September 5 and 6. The competition brings together 10 leading male amateurs from Great Britain and Ireland and 10 from the United States in a team match-play contest. Whaley's inclusion comes less than three weeks before the opening session.

The championship at Merion was played from August 10 to 16, with a field of 312 and stroke-play qualifying before the knockout rounds. Whaley entered among the top 100 players in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, according to the USGA's pre-tournament field information, but his victory settled his Walker Cup position through the championship exemption.

Whaley's comeback in the final capped a demanding week and placed him in one of amateur golf's most prominent international fixtures. The R&A had set August 18 as the date for announcing the full Great Britain and Ireland team, making his U.S. Amateur win the final automatic qualifying result before the squad was confirmed.
