Jack Clarke Strikes Late as Ipswich Beat Sunderland 2-1
Ipswich Town began their Premier League season with a 2-1 victory over Sunderland after substitute Jack Clarke scored a 90th-minute winner at Portman Road. The Guardian reported that Clarke's late finish settled a match in which Ipswich's new attacking recruits made an immediate impact.
Watch the highlights:
Julio Enciso created the opening goal in the 24th minute after Sunderland defender Luke O'Nien gave away possession near halfway. Enciso carried the ball into the visitors' half, moved beyond O'Nien and Dan Ballard, then squared for Emersonn to put Ipswich ahead. It was a productive early contribution from two players brought in during Ipswich's extensive summer recruitment.
Sunderland responded six minutes before halftime through Nilson Angulo. His free kick went in off the crossbar, restoring parity before the interval and leaving the match level at 1-1. Ipswich then applied sustained pressure during the second half but appeared to be heading toward a draw as regulation time ran down.
Clarke entered in the 71st minute for Enciso, who received a standing ovation after a performance that earned him the report's man-of-the-match distinction. With the game in its final minute, Clarke placed his shot into the bottom-right corner to give Ipswich all three points. The decisive goal came against his former club and completed a strong return to the top division for the home side.
The performance also brought early returns on Ipswich's summer spending. According to The Guardian, the club invested more than £150 million in the squad. Emersonn initially became Ipswich's record signing in a £24 million deal plus add-ons before Enciso arrived a month later for £26 million. Emersonn also became the first Brazilian to represent the club.
Ipswich manager Gary O'Neil said Emersonn still had areas to improve but credited the forward for giving Ballard a difficult physical contest. O'Neil also highlighted Enciso's willingness to work defensively alongside his attacking quality. Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris pointed to the scale of the gap between the Championship and Premier League and said consistency over the full season would be the major challenge. For Ipswich, the confirmed result provided an encouraging first return from a reshaped squad.
