Jack Clarke's 90th-Minute Winner Lifts Ipswich Past Sunderland

Ipswich Town marked their return to the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Sunderland at Portman Road on Saturday, secured by Jack Clarke's 90th-minute goal. The Guardian reported that the substitute drove at retreating defenders before placing his finish into the bottom-right corner to settle the opening-weekend contest.

Ipswich took the lead through Emersonn after Sunderland surrendered possession near halfway. Julio Enciso collected Luke O'Nien's misplaced pass, carried the ball into the Sunderland half and beat both O'Nien and Dan Ballard before sliding a pass across goalkeeper Robin Roefs. Emersonn completed the move for his first Ipswich goal.

The opener highlighted the early connection between two prominent summer arrivals. According to The Guardian, Ipswich signed Emersonn for £24 million plus add-ons before later making Enciso a new club-record acquisition at £26 million. Emersonn also became the first Brazilian to play for Ipswich in the match.

Sunderland equalized six minutes before halftime. Nilson Angulo won and took a free kick from near the left edge of the Ipswich penalty area, sending the ball in off the crossbar. The goal left the teams level despite Ipswich creating several promising attacks through Enciso and Emersonn.

Ipswich continued to threaten, with Enciso sending a deft attempt narrowly wide and Emersonn failing to direct a header on target. Clarke entered in the 71st minute in place of Enciso, whose performance drew a standing ovation from the home support, and supplied the decisive moment 19 minutes later.

The late strike gave Ipswich all three points in their first league match back in the top flight. It also ensured that the attacking contributions of Emersonn and Enciso were rewarded after Sunderland had erased the hosts' advantage before the interval. Sunderland left Portman Road without a point after holding Ipswich level for most of the second half.
