Issy Wong Five-Wicket Haul Clinches England ODI Series Against Ireland

Issy Wong took the first five-wicket haul of her international career as England defeated Ireland by six wickets in the second one-day international at Derby. BBC Sport reported that the victory secured the three-match series for England with one game remaining, giving the hosts a 2-0 lead.

Ireland were dismissed for 165 in 47 overs after Wong returned figures of 5-33. Opener Amy Hunter supplied the resistance with 64 from 96 balls, following her half-century in the opening match, but the visiting side struggled to build partnerships around her. Ireland lost their final six wickets for 25 runs.

Wong made the first breakthrough by bowling captain Gaby Lewis for 19. Mady Villiers later removed Orla Prendergast for 25 and Rebecca Stokell for three, opening a path through Ireland's middle and lower order. Hunter was eventually caught on the boundary to give Wong her fifth wicket and end Ireland's innings.

England reached 166-4 in 23 overs, completing the chase with plenty of time to spare despite losing four wickets. Maia Bouchier made 45 from 31 balls and shared an opening stand of 54 in seven overs with Sophia Dunkley, who scored 20 before being run out. Bouchier was then caught off Kia McCartney.

Alice Capsey was lbw for one, while Jodi Grewcock made 24 before chipping a catch to mid-wicket. Freya Kemp and Dani Gibson stopped any further slide, adding an unbeaten 41 to take England across the line. McCartney finished with two wickets for Ireland, but the target was too small to sustain meaningful pressure.

The performance continued Wong's return to England's ODI side after her first appearance in the format since 2024 came in the series opener at Leicester. With Lauren Bell and Sophie Ecclestone resting and Lauren Filer left out of the Derby match, Wong led the pace attack. The series concludes with the third ODI at Worcester on Sunday.
