Isak winner lifts Liverpool past Brentford after two red cards
Liverpool came from behind to beat Brentford 2-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, with Alexander Isak scoring the winner after Victor Muñoz had equalised. According to Sky Sports, the result ended Brentford's unbeaten Premier League start and moved Liverpool above their opponents into fifth place, although the visitors also suffered two injury setbacks.
Watch the highlights:
Brentford had taken the lead through Keane Lewis-Potter's header in the 44th minute. Mundo Deportivo reported that Liverpool had already seen a penalty decision overturned following a VAR review of a challenge on Alexis Mac Allister. Bradley Barcola also missed a first-half opportunity when he broke through, leaving the visitors without a goal before the interval.
The match changed in first-half stoppage time when Yehor Yarmoliuk was dismissed for a headbutting action against Jeremy Jacquet before a Liverpool corner. Sky Sports reported that referee John Brooks checked the pitchside monitor before showing the straight red card. Brentford consequently began the second half a goal ahead but with only 10 players to defend that advantage.
Liverpool did not immediately turn their extra player into an equaliser. Mundo Deportivo described Brentford as continuing to threaten after the restart before Muñoz brought the visitors level with a run and cut inside. Isak then supplied the decisive finish in the 70th minute, receiving Barcola's headed pass to put Andoni Iraola's side ahead for the first time.
Sky Sports reported that Florian Wirtz supplied the pass for Muñoz's 62nd-minute goal, while Mac Allister's cross began the move for Isak's winner. Brentford still had a chance to level through Igor Thiago, who failed to convert from close range. Vitaly Janelt then received a second yellow card in stoppage time for fouling Liverpool substitute Rio Ngumoha.
The victory came despite Liverpool losing Dominik Szoboszlai before half-time and Jeremie Frimpong after the break. Mundo Deportivo reported that Frimpong had entered as a replacement for Ronald Araújo, while Szoboszlai was returning to the side. Liverpool were unable to add a third goal, but held on to leave Brentford sixth in the provisional standings, two points behind them.
