Isak and Muñoz overturn Brentford lead as Liverpool win 2-1
Liverpool recovered from a goal down to beat Brentford 2-1, ending the hosts’ unbeaten Premier League start. Victor Muñoz and Alexander Isak scored as Brentford finished with nine players.

Liverpool beat Brentford 2-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, October 17, with Victor Muñoz and Alexander Isak scoring after the interval. Brentford’s official match report confirmed that the defeat was their first of the Premier League season, with two dismissals leaving the hosts with nine players at the final whistle.

Watch the highlights:

Brentford had taken the lead in the 44th minute through Keane Lewis-Potter. Igor Thiago supplied the cross, and Lewis-Potter arrived to head past Alisson. Earlier, Liverpool had been awarded a penalty following Dango Ouattara’s challenge on Alexis Mac Allister, but a video review reversed the decision after the Brentford player won the ball.

The hosts’ position changed again during first-half added time. Yehor Yarmoliuk was dismissed for violent conduct after an incident involving Jérémy Jacquet while the players waited for a corner. Referee John Brooks reviewed the incident before showing the red card. Brentford therefore began the second half ahead on the scoreboard but with a player fewer.

Liverpool’s own report described a disrupted afternoon for Andoni Iraola’s side. Dominik Szoboszlai was replaced by Trey Nyoni before the break, while half-time substitute Jeremie Frimpong had to leave through injury shortly after coming on for Ronald Araujo. Rio Ngumoha replaced him. Liverpool nevertheless continued to create chances, with Mac Allister testing Caoimhín Kelleher and Virgil van Dijk sending an effort wide.

Muñoz equalised in the 62nd minute after Florian Wirtz released him down the right. He moved inside and beat Kelleher with a left-footed shot. Eight minutes later, Liverpool went ahead: Mac Allister delivered into the area, Bradley Barcola headed the ball towards Isak, and the striker controlled it before finishing. The two goals turned a half-time deficit into the eventual winning margin.

Barcola subsequently hit the crossbar as Liverpool sought a third goal, according to the visitors’ report. Brentford’s final setback came in stoppage time, when Vitaly Janelt received a second yellow card for a foul on Ngumoha outside the penalty area. Liverpool held their advantage to complete the comeback, while Brentford’s unbeaten league run ended despite their first-half lead.
