Isak seals Liverpool comeback as nine-man Brentford lose unbeaten start
Liverpool recovered from a goal down to beat Brentford 2-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, with Alexander Isak scoring the winner after Victor Muñoz had equalised. According to The Guardian's match report, the result moved Liverpool into fifth place and ended Brentford's unbeaten start, with the hosts dropping out of the top four.
Watch the highlights:
Brentford finished with nine players after separate dismissals for Yehor Yarmolyuk and Vitaly Janelt. Yarmolyuk was sent off in first-half stoppage time following a clash with Liverpool defender Jérémy Jacquet before a corner. Referee John Brooks reviewed the incident at the pitchside monitor, leaving Brentford to protect their 1-0 advantage with 10 men throughout the second half. Janelt later received a second yellow card.
The home side had taken the lead through Keane Lewis-Potter, who headed into the top corner from Igor Thiago's cross after Liverpool failed to clear. That breakthrough followed an earlier video review which overturned a Liverpool penalty because Dango Ouattara had touched the ball before colliding with Alexis Mac Allister. Before the opening goal, Jacquet had also made an important tackle to stop Thiago.
Liverpool levelled in the 62nd minute when Florian Wirtz dropped deeper and sent Muñoz through with a pass inside Lewis-Potter. Muñoz cut back and finished low into the far corner with his left foot. Eight minutes later, Wirtz was involved again as Mac Allister delivered a cross, Bradley Barcola headed the ball down and Isak converted from close range to complete the comeback.
The victory also brought injury setbacks for Liverpool. Dominik Szoboszlai was replaced by Trey Nyoni, while Jeremie Frimpong had to leave the field only seven minutes after coming on for Ronald Araújo at right-back. The Guardian's report did not establish the severity of either injury. Liverpool were already without the suspended Ryan Gravenberch, reducing manager Andoni Iraola's midfield options.
Iraola praised the influence of Wirtz and Barcola against the reduced opposition, although he was dissatisfied with Liverpool's play after taking the lead. Thiago threatened an equaliser as Brentford continued to challenge them. Brentford manager Keith Andrews criticised some officiating decisions but accepted Yarmolyuk's dismissal, saying the midfielder would learn from the incident.
