Isabel Schmidt Takes Early Lead in South Africa After Superb Opening 63
German golfer Isabel Schmidt carded a magnificent nine-under-par 63 to grab the first-round lead at the South African Ladies Open, setting the pace at a sun-drenched Gary Player Country Club.
Schmidt's remarkable round included nine birdies and no bogeys, showcasing the kind of pristine ball-striking that has marked her as one of Europe's most promising young talents. The 24-year-old from Munich started her round on the 10th tee and was four under par through her first five holes before truly catching fire on the back nine.
"I felt great from the first shot," Schmidt said. "The conditions were perfect, and I managed to hole some crucial putts when I needed them most. Nine under is always a good score, but more importantly, I felt in control throughout."
The field will now try to hunt down Schmidt over the final 36 holes, with former champion Lee-Anne Pace and rising South African star Kaleigh Telmar sitting joint second at six under par. Pace, seeking her third title in this event, showed vintage form with a bogey-free 66.
Defending champion and world number 12 Yuki Yasuda struggled to a one-over-par 73, leaving her with significant ground to make up. The Japanese star will need to improve dramatically to become just the third player to successfully defend this title.
Schmidt's round breaks the course record by one stroke, and she will take a two-shot advantage into Friday's second round. With strong winds forecast for the weekend, her early momentum could prove crucial in determining the final standings.
