Isabel Schmidt Takes Early Lead in South Africa After Superb Opening 63
German golfer Isabel Schmidt made a stunning start to the South African Ladies Open on Thursday, carding an opening round of 63 to claim a one-stroke lead heading into the second day of action at the Gary Player Country Club.
Schmidt's bogey-free round featured seven birdies, including three in her final five holes, to set the early clubhouse target at seven under par. The 24-year-old, who claimed her first professional victory earlier this year in Morocco, showcased the form that has marked her out as one of European golf's rising stars.
"I felt really comfortable out there today," Schmidt said after her round. "The conditions were perfect and I managed to get into a good rhythm early on. I gave myself plenty of birdie opportunities and managed to convert most of them. There's still a long way to go, but it's a great position to be in."
Englishwoman Emma Clarke sits in second place at six under par after a round that featured six birdies and two bogeys. The defending champion from last season's tournament in Kenya will be looking to mount a challenge over the remaining three rounds.
South Africa's own Lee-Ann Conradie is among a group of four players tied for third at five under par, representing the host nation's best chance of a home victory this week. The local favourite credited the vocal home support for helping her navigate a tricky closing stretch.
The tournament, which carries prize money of €200,000, has attracted a strong field featuring players from over 20 countries. With Schmidt setting such a blistering pace, those behind her will need to produce special performances to mount a serious challenge over the coming days.
