Ireland news conference cut short after FAI rejects allegations against players
The FAI ended the live portion of Heimir Hallgrimsson’s news conference after rejecting allegations against Irish players. A separate investigation into reported racist abuse of Adam Idah remains ongoing.

The live portion of Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson’s news conference ended abruptly on Saturday after the Football Association of Ireland rejected allegations of racism against Irish players. BBC Sport reported that FAI communications chief Kieran Crowley brought proceedings to a close ahead of the Nations League match against Israel in Serbia.

Watch the highlights:

The exchange concerned allegations relating to Ireland’s 3-0 victory over Israel in Hungary the previous Sunday. Crowley denied them. Separately, the FAI is investigating reports that Israel supporters directed racist abuse at Ireland striker Adam Idah in Debrecen. Those reports remain under investigation; neither matter should be presented as an established finding of misconduct.

According to The Irish Times’ live coverage from Backa Topola, the end of the session was followed by angry exchanges inside and outside the room. Irish journalists were subsequently taken to another part of the stadium to continue speaking with Hallgrimsson. Earlier, when asked whether Finn Azaz would play, the manager had declined to disclose his starting team.

Hallgrimsson said he wanted the relevant processes to handle the complaints while he concentrated on football. BBC Sport reported that he had not examined the details and said matters had been reported by both teams. He also praised his players’ support for one another during an emotionally demanding international camp.

There was a separate squad update involving Dara O’Shea. The Irish Times reported that the defender had remained in London because his wife was due to give birth. BBC Sport said O’Shea, who has been captaining Ireland in injured Nathan Collins’ absence, could still rejoin the squad before Sunday’s match. His return was not confirmed.

The latest disruption follows the debate over Ireland’s participation in the fixtures. Associated Press reported last week that the players voted by a significant majority to proceed, while goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu withdrew on grounds of personal conscience. The Irish Times confirmed that Bazunu would not participate in the second meeting either.

Ireland’s designated home fixture is being staged in Backa Topola rather than Dublin. The Irish Times also reported that James Abankwah is suspended following a yellow card against Austria. Hallgrimsson described the additional travel and player rotation as challenges during a window in which Ireland are playing three matches away from home.
