Ireland beat Kazakhstan 4-0 to reach World Cup play-off final against Poland
The Republic of Ireland moved into the final round of Women's World Cup qualifying play-offs with a 4-0 home victory over Kazakhstan on Tuesday, completing a 12-0 aggregate win. BBC Sport reported that Carla Ward's team will now face Poland over two legs for a place at the 2027 tournament in Brazil.
Watch the highlights:
Ireland arrived in Cork with an eight-goal advantage from the first leg in Astana, but the return match remained goalless until the 40th minute. Jessie Stapleton headed in Anna Patten's cross to put the hosts ahead at Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Earlier, Bibigul Nurusheva had cleared an Abbie Larkin effort off the line, while goalkeeper Angelina Portnova denied Larkin and Emily Murphy.
Katie McCabe doubled the lead three minutes after half-time. Lucy Quinn added the third in the 70th minute before Denise O'Sullivan scored from close range three minutes later. Shanade Hopcroft and substitute Marissa Sheva also hit the woodwork. The result extended Ireland's winning record at the Cork venue to four victories from four matches and left Kazakhstan without a goal across either leg of the tie.
McCabe returned to the starting side after missing the first leg through suspension. In comments to RTE Sport carried by BBC Sport, the captain stressed the need to concentrate on preparation for the remaining two matches. Ireland are seeking consecutive World Cup appearances after making their debut at the finals in Australia in 2023, but still have another play-off to negotiate before qualification is secured.
Poland advanced by beating Belgium on penalties after the teams finished level at 3-3 on aggregate. Ireland defeated Poland twice during qualifying in April, although McCabe cautioned that the coming meetings would be different with a World Cup place at stake. Barcelona striker Ewa Pajor is part of the Polish side Ireland will face.
The win continued Ireland's progress under Ward. BBC Sport noted that they had earned promotion to Nations League A by overcoming Belgium in a promotion and relegation play-off, then beaten the Netherlands and Poland during qualifying to retain top-tier status. That recent record accompanies them into the final qualifying tie; Tuesday's result alone does not send them to Brazil.
