Ireland beat Israel 3-0 with three first-half goals in Debrecen

The Republic of Ireland beat Israel 3-0 in Debrecen on Sunday, with Troy Parrott, Adam Idah and Jack Moylan scoring before half-time in their Nations League Group B3 meeting. The result followed Ireland's 1-0 defeat in Kosovo on Thursday, according to The Irish Times' match report from the Hungarian venue.

Parrott scored in the 14th minute, and Idah followed in the 16th after receiving a pass from Moylan. Moylan then added the third in the 25th minute. All three goals arrived during an 11-minute spell, giving Ireland a lead they maintained through to the final whistle without conceding.

Heimir Hallgrimsson changed his starting team after the Kosovo loss. The Irish Times reported that Liam Kitching came in for John Egan, Ryan Manning replaced Liam Scales and Conor Coventry was selected ahead of Jason Knight. Parrott and Idah started, with Finn Azaz and Chiedozie Ogbene left out of the starting side.

The match went ahead after Ireland's players voted to fulfil the fixture at a team meeting on Saturday, BBC Sport reported. Before kick-off, the teams did not shake hands, the Irish players lowered their heads during Israel's anthem and the captains did not exchange pennants. Ireland also wore black armbands; Football Association of Ireland chief executive David Courell said these recognised all lives lost in the Gaza conflict.

Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu had withdrawn from the squad, saying he could not participate in either game against Israel. Hallgrimsson said afterwards that Bazunu would be included for Thursday's match against Austria, but not for the second Israel fixture, according to the BBC. The coach also said players' views about Sunday's match had not determined his team selection, describing the choices as based on who could perform best for Ireland.

Ireland next host Austria at Dublin's Aviva Stadium on October 1 before meeting Israel again on October 4. The FAI has confirmed that the latter fixture will be staged behind closed doors at the TSC Arena in Backa Topola, Serbia, having moved it to a neutral venue because of operational challenges associated with holding the game in Ireland.
