Iraola Sets High-Energy Standard for Liverpool Forwards

Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has told his attacking players to use all of their energy rather than pace themselves to complete every match. The Guardian reported the instruction on Friday as Iraola prepared for his first competitive home game at Anfield, with Nottingham Forest due to visit on Saturday.

Iraola said he regards it as positive when a winger or forward finishes his work exhausted because another player can then take over. His message is that playing the full 90 minutes is not mandatory for Liverpool’s offensive players, provided they have delivered everything required during their time on the pitch.

The coach drew a distinction between attackers and defenders, saying defenders can normally last an entire match more easily. He also pointed to Jérémy Jacquet, who did not have a proper pre-season but is close to full readiness, while explaining that substitutions give him the option to replace attacking players once their work is done.

Iraola also said Victor Muñoz is ready to start matches. The 23-year-old missed the opening weeks of pre-season while recovering after Spain’s victorious World Cup campaign, then made an impact from the bench at Newcastle last weekend. Liverpool signed him from Osasuna for £34.5 million after Iraola recommended the player.

According to Iraola, Liverpool began analysing Muñoz after the club presented his name, and the staff liked the qualities he could offer. The coach acknowledged that the winger is still learning the language and developing relationships with teammates, but praised his attitude and work rate. He said Muñoz can operate on either the right or left side.

Saturday’s fixture will also carry personal significance for Iraola. The Guardian reported that his wife and two young children are expected at Anfield, along with Liverpool’s new vice-chair, Amit Bhatia. Iraola described the occasion as likely to have an emotional element for him, although he intends to focus on the match and reflect on the moment afterward if the result goes well.
