Iraola Backs Liverpool's Long-Term Transfer Plan Amid Injuries

What happened: Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has defended the club's summer recruitment strategy despite significant injuries to Hugo Ekitiké, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni. The Guardian reported that Iraola supports the decision not to spend heavily on temporary cover, saying Liverpool must weigh immediate needs against its longer-term squad plan.

Liverpool recorded the Premier League's highest net spend, according to The Guardian. Bradley Barcola joined on Monday in a deal potentially worth £123 million, adding to an attack that already includes Alexander Isak, signed for £125 million, and £116 million arrival Florian Wirtz. Barcola could make his Liverpool debut away to Ipswich on Friday despite not playing for Paris Saint-Germain this season.

The summer business did not add a right-back, defensive midfielder or specialist right-winger. Iraola said the club considered other options but declined them when a player would not improve the existing squad or when the financial terms did not make sense. He said he remains satisfied with both the signings and the overall quality available.

Injury picture: Leoni has been out with an anterior cruciate ligament injury since last September and is expected to return to first-team training during the international break beginning this month. No return dates have been set for Bradley, who has a serious knee injury, or Ekitiké, who is recovering from an Achilles injury.

Iraola said Liverpool chose to trust its current players during the next two or three months instead of recruiting someone who might not be needed later. His position is that money preserved now could be used to address another squad issue in the future. He acknowledged that managers require players immediately but said the club's wider vision also has to guide decisions.

Why it matters: Liverpool also ended the window without a natural right-winger after exploring moves for Brighton's Yankuba Minteh and Crystal Palace's Ismaïla Sarr, The Guardian reported. Iraola believes Barcola, Victor Muñoz, Cody Gakpo and Rio Ngumoha can cover the two wide positions. He said his previous teams required wingers to operate on either flank and expressed confidence that Liverpool's available group can do the same.
