Ion Tiriac Backs Jannik Sinner to Challenge Roger Federer's Wimbledon Record
Tennis icon Ion Tiriac believes world number one Jannik Sinner can challenge Roger Federer's record of eight Wimbledon titles and reach over 20 Grand Slam victories in what he describes as a stellar career for the Italian.
Speaking on 'La Politica Nel Pallone', the Romanian businessman and former Davis Cup finalist outlined why he believes Sinner is uniquely equipped to dominate the All England Club. 'In my opinion, Wimbledon is the Slam he will win most. He can aspire to beat Roger Federer's record of eight titles,' Tiriac said. 'He can easily reach over 20 [Grand Slams]. What he simply needs is someone to help him with his planning.'
Sinner claimed his first Wimbledon crown last year, defeating two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets in the final. That victory signaled something significant — that the Italian's rise was not confined to hard courts alone. His tactical intelligence, endurance, and versatile serve have made him a threat on every surface.
Tiriac, who spent decades organizing elite tennis events through his stewardship of the Madrid Open, also quantified Sinner's commercial value. 'Economically, he is worth at least 100 million euros a year, more than double that of a footballer,' the 85-year-old said.
Already, Sinner has achieved something Federer never managed. The world number one started 2026 by winning the first three Masters 1000 events of the season — a streak the Swiss maestro never put together. Sinner closed 2025 with a Paris Masters victory and will look to extend that remarkable run when the Madrid Open begins on April 22.
The conversation about Federer's Wimbledon record may feel premature. After all, Federer accumulated eight titles across 15 years of near-total dominance at SW19. But Sinner, still just 24, is playing with a consistency and hunger that makes the previously unthinkable worth discussing. Whether he stays healthy and motivated enough to challenge that ceiling remains the central question for the next phase of his career.
